You know sometimes you’ve just gotta take that adorning mirror and put it away and then try someone else’s for size. That adorning mirror that you’ve made yourself comfortable in can change in the blink of an eye. These ephemerally perfect perfections that you’ve come to know and love in the spirit of your own eyes have now become skewed and unravelled under the lens of somebody else.

And by no means do I claim perfection, I’ve had orange hair at two points in my life in which I really actually did enjoy (despite what others have to say about it ;]). However, it does take a realisation that you really can’t just always think about yourself. Sure, you are the person who should matter most when you think about preservation, it’s a natural human instinct. There is however the time when you can no longer just become the centre of the universe because although you might be the sun of the universe one day, your core will come collapsing down and for all we know we could end up being engulfed by some other body of mass or even become a black hole in the loneliness that is empty space.

Now, if you could get what I’m beating around the bush about I applaud you. However, for those who I need to be frank with I have a thought to leave you with:

Be Your Own Person. Your identity is who YOU are, not who you are WITH. Never let these two engulf each other because nothing is ever shared equally when things part ways and much like that greedy kid who gets the bigger piece of chocolate. There will always be the one who gets the smaller piece.

If you take offence to this, I apologise. I just plea that you give thought as to why you are offended.

Very few of us are born with the ambition to end up as a retail runt perpetually working the cyclic grunt just to get ourselves through life without having to resort to the dole and becoming just another dole bludger. Yet many of us begin our careers at some point in some form of retail/customer service role. Yet when we look at the way that people treat retail staff it honestly beckons me to propose the question. Where the hell do you get off treating people like your flipping lackeys?

I’m by no means excusing the minor few staff who are either completely incompetent or just plain outright rude to everyone, however, we are definitely humans and sometimes I feel like people forget that. To the self entitled consumers who live by the customer always being right who attend the college of current affairs shows, I’d like to remind you that you reap what you sow.

Just yesterday, I’m serving a customer who had clearly picked his nose right in front of me and so I decided to wipe off the pen and desk with a wet wipe until this old batty lady with a trolley full (to the brim) with suitcases who immediately begins to insult my attitude complaining that she can see it a mile away and that I shouldn’t be in possession of such attitude considering how much money I’m in charge of. Out of the blue must I mention, considering I had not even previously served her this lady has the audacity to attack my apparent attitude.

And thus I have composed a list of lesser known customer guidelines for the clueless:

If you’re on the phone while I’m serving you, I will walk away.

If you say “Hey you!” I will not respond.

If you drop something. I will glare at you.

If you walk in through the exit, I will also glare at you and occasionally point out the exit sign and tell you to enter through the “ENTRY”.

If you’re an arrogant brunt who thinks you know policies better than I do, think again, I read this shit just to shove it back at you, especially the consumer law.

If you don’t have the mental ability to be empathetic, I have the right to explain to you that I will not refund your products because no one will ever want to buy your already worn undergarments that you ‘tried on’ and took 3 months to return.

If you choose to verbally assault me, I will have no reservations in calling management or security to deal with you because I ain’t paid to deal with that.

If you put a full basket/trolley right on my register space, I will force you to pull out the items from the basket and also remove the trolley that you’ve been rolling around the floor because I ain’t your lackey.

If you throw money at me I will not put your change in your hands. Pick it up off the counter and learn some respect.

If I have just finished serving a customer and am clearly not ready / haven’t specifically called “Next waiting please” don’t come up just to get angry when I reject you because I AM BUSY.

The thing is, nothing I’ve written above is anything more than common sense and courtesy. However, to you special customers who go out of your way to be the most pain free customers I’ll be serving today, Thank You and I hope to see you again. :)

Please, I never want to ever experience what many people have gone through today. As someone verging on 21 it occurs to me that I particularly don’t enjoy the sight of blood in photos. It’s one thing to talk about ‘bloodshed’ like it’s just another aspect of carnage…. but to actually see it happen right in front of you…. I just wouldn’t be able to deal. My thoughts go out to all the families and more importantly, fellow humans.
